For people less informed about drinking certain spirits like scotch, bourbon, particular wines, and tequila have strict requirements to be that actual spirit.
For anything to be call a scotch it of course must come Scotland. There are a few countries that produce scotch outside Scotland most notably Japan. Though the true definition of a scotch is a blend of whiskeys. So in actuality Single Malt Scotchs are not actually scotches but actually whiskeys. Most American drinker don't know the difference, but a must when traveling to Scotland since they take their scotch very seriously its a important piece of information.
Whats the difference between Bourbon and other American Whiskeys. Bourbon can only come from Kentucky. Now some places call their products a Kentucky Bourbon made in "?" though they aren't actually a bourbon. Certain places in Kentucky are as serious as the Scot's about that distinction.
Certain wines come from certain regions and only wines produced in that region can be called that particular wine including Champagne, Burgundy's, and others. So if you every ask self why you can't get a Napa Valley Burgundy, thats the reason.
Tequila is a recent addition to this group of spirits. A group of the Mexican Government filed in international court and won the rights that anything that could be called Tequila sold internationally must be made in Mexico. Though personally I don't really know any other countries producing the stuff.
So there are some facts to make a little wiser the next time they visit the liquor store.
