In this day in age the flashlight accessory market is becoming more & more competitive. Surefire has been leading the way the past few years with their tactical innovations in flashlight design. Though in the past few years a number competitors have begun to try to pry Surefire out of its #1 spot.
Fenix is one of those company's. I personally don't own a Fenix light, but have done a fair share reading on their products. They do for the most part make a good quality flashlight for a reasonable price. Though what makes Surefire a better product for a gun enthusiast and more so a LEO or member of the military.
Fenix makes lights that run on may everyday types of batteries like AAA & AA while Surefire's mostly run on Lithium C123A batteries. While these lithium batteries are more expensive they do have one great advantage over regular acid batteries; shelf life. Current C123A batteries have a life of 10 years versus conventional batteries of only a few years. This especially important for LEO & military since their lights may sit in storage rooms for years before being used.
Another reason to buy a Surefire and pay the higher expense is durability. I am not saying Fenix and similar new company's make lights that are not durable, but only a few company's like Surefire, Pelican, and Streamlight make thousands of lights for military and LE. Those lights were tested in actual combat or to extremely high standards while new competitors have not had theirs. Many of their lights weren't even designed for that environment. Durability is very important even for a casual AR fanatic since mounting a light that can take constant punishment from the firing of a weapon is very important.
Surefire makes a flashlight built to last. Thats why their more expensive. So if you looking for something to keep in a drawer or carrying in a tool box but something inexpensive. If your looking to mount something on a rifle, shotgun, or pistol buy Surefire or another quality flashlight company.
